Anita Smith

Head Deacon

Anita Smith

Anita Smith has worshipped at Union Baptist Church since 2008 and has served as Head Deacon since 2016. She has helped develop a caring network of volunteers who support people through illness, bereavement, financial difficulty, and changes in family life.

Faith and Early Life

Born and raised in Sydney, Anita grew up in a home where kindness was expressed through practical action. Her mother regularly prepared meals for neighbours, and her father volunteered with local community organisations. Their example helped shape her understanding of Christian service.

Work and Church Service

Anita pursued a career in nursing, later working in aged care and community health. This work taught her to remain calm under pressure, respect people’s privacy, and notice when someone needs support but finds it difficult to ask.

As Head Deacon, Anita coordinates visitation, meal support, welcoming activities, and assistance for vulnerable members. She works with the pastoral team and encourages volunteers to build relationships that continue beyond Sunday services. She has also supported local food collections and companionship programmes for older adults.

Family and Interests

Anita and her husband, David, have three adult children and four grandchildren. Their home is a frequent gathering place for family lunches and visiting friends. Anita enjoys baking, gardening, and early morning walks.

A Caring Church

For Anita, a caring church is one where people feel comfortable asking for help and confident that someone will respond.
