Bill Newton has been part of Union Baptist Church for more than twenty years and has served as an Elder since 2012. He first became involved by helping lead a small Bible study group, where his thoughtful explanations and willingness to listen made him a trusted source of encouragement.
Faith and Early Life
Raised in regional New South Wales, Bill grew up in a Christian family where Sunday worship, hospitality, and helping neighbours were part of everyday life. His parents encouraged him to take his faith seriously while remaining curious, humble, and considerate of others.
Work and Church Service
Bill spent much of his professional life in secondary education, first as a teacher and later in student welfare and mentoring. Supporting young people and their families helped him develop a careful, attentive approach to listening and difficult conversations.
As an Elder, Bill supports Rev. Gian Luca Bignardi in the spiritual care of the congregation. He contributes to Bible teaching, prayer meetings, member visits, and mentoring younger church leaders. He also takes part in community initiatives supporting older residents and people experiencing isolation.
Family and Interests
Bill and his wife, Margaret, have been married for more than forty years. They have two adult children and three grandchildren. In his free time, Bill enjoys gardening, reading history, and taking coastal walks with Margaret.
A Personal Approach to Ministry
Bill’s approach is simple: make time for people, take their concerns seriously, and help them find encouragement in Scripture.
